Our Story

Our Story

Amelia & James started on a porch in Savannah, at the last light of a long afternoon, over the same complaint we kept hearing from every woman we knew: nothing out there was made for the life she actually lived. Not for someone half her age, not for a size chart's idea of her. So we decided to make it ourselves.

Amelia has the eye, the taste, the years of dressing for everyone but herself. James has the patience for the parts nobody sees, the steady hand who finally said the obvious thing over that last glass of sweet tea: then let's make what you actually want to wear. We are a Savannah couple, a small team, and a boutique that stays small and considered on purpose.

It began the way most good things in Savannah do, slowly, unhurried, in the low-country light. We started with dresses, because a good dress is the most forgiving, most versatile thing a woman can own, one piece that carries her from a garden lunch to a farmers market to a wedding without a second thought. Then the pieces that live around a dress: easy blouses and sweaters, a jacket for the marsh wind coming off the water, sandals a woman can walk all day in and still feel pretty.

Our rule, from the very first piece, is a question. Before anything comes in, we ask: would it look right walking under the Spanish moss on Jones Street, or catching the last of the day in Forsyth Park, or out past the marsh as the Tybee lighthouse comes on? If it wouldn't, it doesn't come in. That is why the collection stays small. We would rather carry a hundred things we love than a thousand we don't.

The colors come from the same place we do. Dune sand, sage palmetto, faded oyster, and the deep green of the live oaks, the palette we see every morning. The fabrics are chosen to breathe in Georgia heat and hold their shape past the first summer. And everything is cut for real women, in real bodies, the way a woman is actually built rather than the way a size chart pretends she is.

Amelia & James is not a big company pretending to be a small one. It is a small one. A handful of people who pack the orders, answer the emails like the neighbor down the street would, and want, more than anything, for a woman to open the box and feel, for once, like it was made for her. One less thing to worry over, and one more reason to feel like yourself.

Want to know how we ship, or how a return works if a piece isn't quite right? It's all laid out plainly on our Shipping Policy and Refund Policy, and if a return is on your mind, just email us first at support@ameliajames-savannah.com and we'll send you the instructions and the return address. You can also reach us any time through our contact form, and our FAQ covers the questions we hear most.

With love from the Georgia coast,
Amelia & James.
